Time is Gold

Time is Gold

In one of Chinese proverbs, it says that "An inch of time is an inch of gold, but you can't buy that inch of time with an inch of gold".「一寸光陰一寸金,寸金難買寸剛光陰」[In ancient period, time can be measured by the increased or decreased length of the shadow of a stick.] It means that time is so precious that even the most precious and valuable item in the world cannot exchange for a piece of time.

But how do you define you are not wasting your time. It is difficult to determine. There were things that you thought you were wasting your time, but yet, later in life, you realized that somehow because of that experience or the time spent, you gained something invaluable from it. In an extreme example such as serving time in a jail, most of people will agree that it can be seemed as a waste of time, but many powerful people in the human history did not waste their time while in the jail.

People like Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote letters and share their thoughts and had made significant impacts to our world. Even the great leader, Genghis Khan, had to endure hardship in slave jail, and when the time came, he unleashed his full potential after he escaped from jail to become the biggest land empire in the history. I think nobody could compare how jail time can be well spent to change a man's life so dramatically is Malcolm X. He was just like any ordinary convicts that served jail time since he was convicted of robbery. He spent seven years in prison and wasted no time where he educated himself from the point he couldn't even write in a straight line or only able to read a few words as he described in his autobiography to become one of the most articulate and powerful leaders of black American during the 1960s. In the movie inspired by the true story of Eugene Brown, Life of a King, he learned how to play chess in the jail had not only changed his own life, but also made a great impact to people's life after he was out of jail. Many famous people like Robert Downey, Jr., Tim Allen, Christian Slater, 50 Cent, had been jailed and turned their life around and become successful in later life. Life can be very difficult sometimes. Everyone has their own issues and problems. But once you find your purposes and goals in life, time will be well spent. Not everyone can achieve their goals even if you have tried very hard to obtain it. What matters the most is how you think, how you talk, how you react to the challenge, and these are the things that define you and shape your character. It is the process or the things happened down the road matter the most and not the destination. We cannot control what will happen tomorrow or what this road really lead us to, but one thing for sure is that when the time comes, we have no regret on how time was spent and being ready for that one opportunity in your life time that you have the ability to grab it. There is nothing more than well spent time than gold.
